As Sherlock goes around and searches the clues, every player tries to remember each of the eight objects hidden in a facedown circle of cards. Then, Sherlock travels from one card to another. Each time Sherlock stops at a facedown card, the player has to remember which object is on that card. Sherlock continues to move, as long as the player guesses correctly.

This version does not include the Sherlock figure.

The Boardroom Staff Review:
In an effort to review games that just do not seem to receive the recognition or reviews that other more "popular" games do, I wanted to hit the game Sherlock from Playroom Entertainment. Playroom Entertainment touts this game as "A memory game for the whole family." Actually, I might have to agree.

It takes the normal memory game and adds a twist that we have not experienced before as a family. We have played games such as Make It Up! by Gamewright Games that take the age old Memory game and add a twist such as shapes and parts and pieces (by the way, my 4 year old loves that game). And those games are good... but they all tend to have the same game mechanics (wow, slipped in that board gaming terminology on a memory game!!) - pick a card/tile and match it to another.

That is where standard memory games and Sherlock separate. Reinhard Staupe designed this game where all players are shown the eight cards in the circle face up at the beginning of the game. The cards are then turned face down. The current player is asked to say what a certain card is (chosen by the player to his/her right). If the current player is correct then the he/she must say what another card is (the new card is chosen by the number and arrow on the card turned over - i.e. 2 cards to the right). Once the arrows and numbers tell the player to identify a card he/she has already correctly identified, the player takes that card and places it face down in front of them (replacing that card in the circle with a card from the top of the deck). The game is over once a player has 6 cards (this number can be lowered for a shorter game) and the player with 6 cards is the winner.

The interesting part of this game comes in the replacement of cards. The mind is a wonderful thing... mine isn’t, but most minds are. Think about this - when the banana card is replaced with the umbrella, will you remember that it was the banana card the umbrella replaced? Or was it the cherries? Or the table? Or was the table replaced by the chair? Or was the chair replaced by the bell? This game definitely challenges the players to remember not just the original cards, but also the changes made to the cards in the game.

Although I would not recommend this game for just adults, it is a great game to play with the kids. It would also make a very good game for the classroom... Hammer anyone? Or is it a hat now? - Marc (The Boardroom Staff Reviewer)
